Mullaiperiyar dam Supreme Court Committee report submitted
Supreme Court appointed five-member committee, headed by former chief justice of India A S Anand, today submitted its report in the Supreme Court on the controversy regarding Mullaperiyar dam in which states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala are locked in a legal battle.
A five judge constitutional bench, headed by Justice D K Jain, is hearing the dispute between the two southern states.
Kerala government is for replacing the Mullaiperiyar dam with a new one, while Tamil Nadu wants to retain the present dam.
Kerala argued that the dam has already outlived its sanctioned life and was badly damaged at several places in the base which could lead to huge loss of life and property in the state.
Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, said the dam is a source of irrigation for the farmers of south Tamil Nadu.
Earlier, Tamil Nadu had won a round of litigation and Kerala Assembly passed a law to nullify the earlier ruling of the apex court. (UNI)
